About Us

Empowering women

Ensi Women in a non-profit organization, established in 2008 in Fort Portal, Tooro, in western Uganda.  We empower women, young and old, and help improve their families’ living conditions.

We do this by raising funds to educate girls and boys from poor families, including those that are disabled, orphans and single parent families, mainly headed by women.  Many of these children are looked after by grandmothers or other relatives who have very little means. We support children from primary school, through secondary school, vocational institutions and where possible, we also contribute to funding students’ university education.

Ensi also helps women earn a living mainly through cultural activities as this region has a rich and varied cultural heritage.  We help women sell their crafts, organize cultural tours for tourists visiting the region to women’s homes to experience the local culture, and involve women in preserving historical and cultural artifacts for online and physical museum exhibitions.

Educating children and youth

Ensi raises funds from individuals from all over the world  to help educate children from poor families.  Many of these children are orphans, some are disabled and others come from single parent families.  Many of our children are cared for by grandmothers or other relatives who have very few means of earning an income.

At any one time we have over 50 children at different stages of education from primary school, secondary school, vocational institutions and  where, possible, we contribute to their university education.

The children we support are part of the Ensi family and we follow their progress, offering counselling and guidance where needed, and work experience during school holidays.

We send photographs, school reports and letters from the students we support to the individuals who sponsor their education to keep them updated of their progress.

Cultural programs

Ensi Women is based in Tooro Kingdom, one of the few kingdoms in Uganda. In addition to its spectacular nature reserves and national parks including the Rwenzori Mountains World Heritage Site , Tooro has a rich cultural heritage.

Tooro is home to people of many cultures.  It attracts those from other districts in Uganda and even from neighbouring countries such as Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania, thanks to its beauty, temperate climate and fertile land. This melting pot of cultures provides an opportunity for cultural tourism to thrive.

Ensi Women supports women to sell their crafts including the widely sought after beautiful basketry work from the region.  We involve women in collecting historical and cultural artifacts for online and physical museum exhibitions and organize cultural performances.  We also invite tourists to this popular destination to visit women’s homes to experience the local culture.  In this way, women, including the elderly, who cannot do heavy physical work can earn a living.

Community outreach

In addition to helping individual women, children and youth, Ensi Women undertakes community outreach and advocacy activities aimed at highlighting the value of education and cultural preservation for community development.

Every year, we invite local primary and secondary schools to  the only education fair in the region. The unique event is attended by community leaders, local businesses, universities, vocational schools, other non-profit organizations.  The fair features an exciting academic challenge among schools, exhibitions, music and drama performances, career counselling, health checks.  The fair culminates in an award ceremony to recognize schools that perform well in the academic challenge to promote academic excellence.

Ensi also holds an annual cultural festival with participation from schools and local cultural groups.  The festival brings together diverse cultures in the region, which has a rich cultural heritage, to promote unity among different cultural groups, celebrate our diversity and highlight the importance of cultural preservation.  We also show how culture can support economic development, such as through cultural tourism.
